Cartagena hosts ICANN as 39th International Meeting Opens

On Monday ICANN's 39th International Meeting opened in Cartagena, Colombia. ICANN President and CEO Rod Beckstrom's opening speech underscored the values ICANN is committed to. He highlighted ICANN's accomplishments and looked forward to the Internet's future. Some of the points in the President's Report are reproduced here:

Internationalization, Inclusiveness, and a Multi-Stakeholder Model:

Twelve countries and territories now have Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) in the root zone, with more coming.

Through the Affirmation of Commitments, ICANN is accountable to the world, not to any one country.

More countries continue to join ICANN's Governmental Advisory Committee (GAC).

Reliability, Stability, and Security:

With a tiny percentage of the rapidly depleting IPv4 addressing system remaining, ICANN is already supporting and implementing a smooth transition to the massive IPv6.

Domain Name System Security Extensions (DNSSEC) have been implemented by a remarkable number of Top-Level Domain operators, exceeding expectations.

Innovation:

New Generic Top Level Domains (new gTLDs), once launched, will promote competition, innovation, and consumer choice.

Transparency and Accountability:

ICANN is committed to being transparent in all our activities. A draft report from the Accountability and Transparency Review Team was posted last month.
